What Next?
Please relax, unwind, have fun, and enjoy your stay!
I know what you are thinking already. Why on earth would we put a picture of us with a beautiful blue ocean in the background and four adorable children? Easy; when you have four kids, getting a nice, cooperative shot is like quantum physics. This was the best picture we could find. Moving on.
This is definitely “not required reading” but if you would like to know a little about us and why we built this home, here it is.
We are Mark and Niles and we live not too far away from this brand new Short Term Rental. Both of us have worked in the hospitality industry for part of our lives. We are available 24/7 and will assist you as much or as little as you desire. We have lived in the Triangle area since 1998 and can help you make the most of your visit or we can just leave you to relax and explore on your own. Niles is from Georgia by birth but grew up in Nigeria while I was born in Nigeria but grew up here in America. We met at a wedding reception in Charlotte, North Carolina, got married, and had four lovely children! Oh, we recently just got a rescue pet; an American Bulldog named Stella. She is the sweetest thing.
We fell in love with this Old East Durham community, because it is a small quiet neighborhood with AMAZING neighbors and it is in close proximity to downtown Durham. Our home is located on a quiet street down a tree-covered alley, in a fairly quiet neighborhood. We built this tiny house so that others could enjoy the beauty of this neighborhood, the close proximity to downtown Durham and all it has to offer, trails and greenspace within a few mins drive to the Eno River. Having been in the hospitality business just made this area a perfect fit.
Summer’s Breeze was built with simplicity in mind. Clean lines and no clutter, providing a comforting and relaxing feeling. Big windows catch the natural daylight from sunrise to sunset. The wrap-around deck provides ample space to engage in a much needed morning yoga session or enjoy a cup of joe while you relax into the evening. The feeling of seclusion while knowing you are in the center of the city are second to none.
Enjoy Your stay!
When you first access this guidebook on your phone you’ll notice a prompt to add it to your home screen. This is highly recommended. It’s faster, easier to access, and available if you’re ever offline without reception.
Following the prompt will add an app icon to your phone. It’s just like any other app, but without you needing to download anything or sign in!
We have tried to think outside the box and provide things for your use to make it a little more comfortable and more interesting. Or maybe you just forgot to pack some of these things. If you get here and see something that you wish was here, Please LET US KNOW!
We have this wonderful tool that walks you through our home. Simply click the following link to start the tour!
3D Video tour Le Maison Faye
Le Maison Faye has been accredited with Airbnb’s “Enhanced Clean” certification.
The cleaning staff have been trained in COVID cleaning protocols and wear appropriate PPE for each task. While the cleaners are working, all the doors and windows are open and the house is left to air for a minimum of five hours.
Our house was designed and built with “minimalistic” features throughout which enable us to clean all surfaces thoroughly. All bedding including duvet covers are washed in hot water after every usage.
Normally we offer a quick tour of the home but during this time we would love to just meet you in the driveway to say hello (if necessary) and make sure you have everything you need. We will follow proper social distancing protocol.

Here is a simple checkout list:
We hope you enjoyed your stay and we would appreciate you signing our guest book and giving us a review. Have a safe trip home.
Do you have children only channels?
Netflix has a children icon when accessing it. We do not have a child lock on the streaming channels.
Can I hook up my computer to the TV?
Yes, you can. We provide an HDMI cable for each TV; 10ft for the living room and a 3ft for the master bedroom. Both cables are already attached and plugged in on the back of the TV.
Do you have surge protectors?
The charging station in the kitchen breakfast area is surge protected, so are the USB ports in the bedrooms.
Why did you name the two bedrooms “Sea Cloud” and “Bermuda”?
We have a personal connection to both. Barbara worked as Third Cook on the SY Sea Cloud and crossed the Atlantic twice. Both of us worked in Bermuda, fell in love, got married, started a family, and had 16 wonderful years on the island. We are happy to share our memories with you, just ask.
Why did you furnish mostly with IKEA products?
We love clean lines, practicality, and a sort of minimalism. Also, we like to test our marriage putting furniture together, just kidding. After assembling the first bedroom, we got really sore and tired of tightening screws and attaching brackets.
What about bears?
We included information on bears in residential areas in the booklet as a separate item. Most importantly, use common sense. Don’t come between momma bear and cubs. Adolescent bears are unpredictable; compare them with teenagers. Don’t frighten them.
What about turkeys?
A flock is always searching the area for food. In the evening they take off and fly into the surrounding trees. Yes, they can fly… You might hear a lot of thrashing and noise when they land on a tree branch until they get settled to roost for the night.
What about the birds?
We refill the bird feeder and the water bath before each guest arrives. Enjoy the view. Please don’t open the window or try to refill the bird feeder. Give us a shout if the bird feeder is empty.
Do you have additional seating available?
Please give us a heads up and we will extend the dining room table to seat 8 comfortably. We can also provide additional folding chairs.
Why can’t I open the windows all the way?
All windows have child locks (the small red stopper on the right side of each window). If you wish to open the window all the way, push the red stopper in, hold it, and slide the window up. I thought I was going crazy the first time I tried to open the windows as I was not used to child locks. Lesson learned.
What happens if the toilet is clogged or a sink does not drain?
The house is brand-new and it should not happen, but I don’t want to assume anything. We have two plungers, one for toilets and one for sinks, located next to the utility sink in laundry room. Both are labeled as we don’t want any mix-ups.
Do you have more pillows?
Each bedroom has two spare pillows in closet. We also provide a body pillow which is in the walk-in closet of the master suite.
Why the under bed lighting?
Well, we stayed once at a fancy hotel and we were pleasantly surprised by the sensor lights under the bed. We could find the way to the bathroom without turning the lights on…It is purely a safety feature that we installed at our own home and we haven’t bumped into the bed frame since.
I plan on cooking something special and cannot find a specific utensil. Can you help?
Sure, just text us and we try our best to help you out.
Do you have brochures and menus?
Sure, we do. We have maps and menus in the kitchen drawer below the coffee station. Guides and even more brochures are in desk drawer upstairs.
What is the problem with the door from the garage to the house?
Well, we know. It is a sticky issue. The door is heavy and difficult to open and close. I guess the builders wanted to keep us out…
This House has free Wi-Fi. The login instructions are on a placard on the wall near the entrance to the living room.
Phone chargers:
Outlet on kitchen island as well as inside the nightstands in Master Bedroom : IPhone8, Samsung GalaxyS6 and newer.
USB ports: On kitchen island
Please let us know immediately if you have any interruption or issues with your internet service.
Smart lock entry:
TO UNLOCK: press Schlage logo and enter code. The door will automatically lock in 60 seconds.
Note: If you have any trouble with the smart lock there is a regular key in a lock box.
Due to the sensitive nature of this information we will email or text access codes separately.
You can park on the street but we advise that you park in the backyard as the home sits on a long straightaway street that doesn’t have speedbumps. Sometimes people tend to take liberties of the quiet residential speed limit of 35 MPH on the street. Many of our guest have parked on the street without a single issue to date.
CORN HOLE
A great Southern tradition is the game of Corn Hole!
The boards and rules of the game can be found in the garage. Please set up boards in the gravel pits to the left of the garage. Enjoy and dont forget to put the boards away so they won’t get wet!

The LG Remote controls the television. Select ON
The Shaw Direct/Starchoice remote controls the satellite receiver. All channel selection/changing is via this remote.
The Philips remote controls the DVD player. To watch a DVD, change the input/source on LG remote to AV1.
To return to satellite, use LG remote input/source and select HDM1 (ensure satellite receiver is switched ON using Shaw Direct remote)
The Satellite is not configured for Pay for View.
We provide a starter pack which includes a roll of paper towels, a roll of toilet paper in each bathroom, a few trash bags, basic cleaning products such as dish soap and dishwasher detergent. In the kitchen we provide basic spices such as salt and pepper and other commonly used spices. If your cooking style requires something special please bring it! You will need to purchase these supplies for the rest of your stay.
We have a range of chairs, unbrellas, wind breaks, and toys that you can take to the beach. There is even a cart on wheels that will help you to carry it all! You can find it in the small outbuilding to the left of the pool. Please do not take any patio or poolside furniture – you’ll find everything you need in the outbuilding!
We respectfully request that the towels in the property are left in the home. You can use them for our pool, but we would ask that you take your own to the beach.
Getting to the beach is easy! It really is a few minutes walk… turn left down Greenways Drive and walk for 300m. Turn left at the bottom and, after a few paces the access will be on your right. Easy!
We provide a grill on the deck. Operation is simple as the grill has an automatic starter. Please do remember to turn the gas on! There is also a set of BBQ tools in the kitchen. If the propane runs out there is a spare tank in the garage. Please clean it after use and keep it covered when not in use to prevent wear and tear.
Please ensure everyone in the group reads and understands the hot tub instructions which are on the side of the hot tub.
Important tip: The hot tub takes a few hours to warm up so please ensure that you allow for this should you wish to use it – instant heat is not possible!
Providing the tub is used responsibly, you should not have any problems.
If at any time the water turns cloudy, a scum begins to form, or there is an unpleasant smell, let us know immediately so we can adjust the chemical balance. YOU MUST NOT USE THE TUB under these circumstances.
Continuing to use the tub when the filter needs changing may cause damage to the system.
The pool is heated to 85F during non peak months (March – November). During peak summer months (December – February) the pool is not heated as the sun is strong enough to keep it warm. We have never needed to heat the pool during these months!
Our local maintenance man, Herman, regularly checks the water quality but if you do have any questions or think there might be a problem with the filters or pumps then please let us know immediately and we’ll get Herman round to take a look. Do NOT attempt to fix anything yourself.
The beds have been freshly made up for your stay and there are towels in the bathrooms. There are linens and pillows for the pullout couch in the cupboard in the master bedroom.
Twice a week the housekeeping will arrive to change your sheets and bring you new towels. We respect the environment so, if you’d prefer they didn’t change your sheets, we’d be a-ok with that! (It’s entirely your choice, however.)
On your departure day, please strip all used beds (including duvet covers) and place in the laundry room.
Garbage and recycling will be collected on a Wednesday. Please put any bags and boxes out the night before on the curb.
Please follow the below instructions for correct disposal:
Black: All food garbage (including bones), tea bags, coffee grounds and used filter papers, used kitchen towel, grease, fats and oils, hair and fur.
Blue: Clean paper and paper products (including magazines and newspapers) and all cardboard. Please flatten your cardboard boxes before you place it in the box.
Green: Clean (rinsed) plastic containers, metal cans, bottle tops and waxed cartons.
Power outages do happen in this part of the world so please be prepared. The house breaker panels are located in the laundry room off the main kitchen area; all breakers are labelled. Should the power fail there are torches and candles in the laundry room cupboards.
**Important**
Following a power outage, please ensure that all stove and oven switches are turned off immediately and all saucepans etc. are removed from the stove top and oven.
This will ensure that when external power is restored there is no risk of fire from burning pots and pans. Similarly, if candles are used, guests are asked to ensure they do not pose a fire risk by being used thoughtlessly or by leaving burning candles unattended.
We know how important sleep can be, especially if you are not in your own bed and on holiday or a business trip. The design, comfort, and amenities for the three bedrooms were of utmost importance.
Your bed is “European Style” with a “duvet”.
The duvet (comparable to a comforter) is enclosed in a sheet cover similar to a pillow and pillow case. Simply lay down on the fitted bottom sheet and pull the duvet on top of you.
All covers and sheets are washed after every use.
We provide microfiber bedding and all pillows are feather free. Spare pillows are located in the individual closets.
In case a guest prefers a body pillow, it is located on the top rack of the master bedroom walk-in closet.
I don’t know about you but reading in bed with a traditional lamp on the side table gives me a neck ache, not to mention you almost fall out of bed turning it on and off. We installed 2 individual LED reading lamps for each bed so you can read in comfort without disturbing your partner.
Under bed lighting:
When you step out of bed in the middle of the night for whatever reason, a low light will glow from under the bed to give you safe passage. It will stay lit for 30 seconds so don’t move too slow. It will then come on again when you approach the bed for a safe landing. If you get up a lot or the light is just annoying to you, feel free to unplug it behind the night table. We also installed low light in the hallways on both floors so you can move around the entire house without turning on lights and waking everyone up.
Window treatments:
Bedrooms are provided with sheer curtains which let the warm beautiful sunlight through. However if you prefer a dark room and total privacy there are roll down “black-out” shades in the two guest rooms. Please hold on to them when you release them to the open position. The Master bedroom has an electric shade. The remote is on the table. Please DO NOT pull this shade by hand (thanks).
Sometimes you might prefer to just sit comfortably in your room rather than be in bed so we have outfitted all rooms with the famous Pöang chair along with a floor lamp. And in case you are wondering the comfy chairs hold up to 375 pounds; but seriously, you don’t need to test that out.
Each closet has sensor lights, quality hangers, luggage rack, towel rods and spare pillows. In addition, you will find (2) robes which are perfect for that trip to the hot tub!
(6) USB charging ports in each bedroom “next to the bed”
Flash light, because sometimes “things just happen”
Alarm clock
Wall safe in master bedroom closet
The loft has a sofa that can be converted into a twin bed. All the sheets, mattress pad, pillow, and duvet cover are stored in the walk-in closet. Extra towels are also provided. In addition, the loft has a full desk with desk lamp and phone charger.
The sleeper sofa is 67” x 39”. When you change the back position, push it to the front to release its position and then lock it into the new position. If you have any trouble putting it back to a sofa just leave it and we will take care of it!
Now we have your attention!!
Our philosophy behind having a “TUSHY” bidet in our rental!
It’s all about creating a guest experience so hopefully this will be a good one.

It is one of our favorite ways brewing coffee. The volume is 1.25 litre, which is about 5 cups. Don’t be fooled by the 12 cups on the glass carafe. The cup-size in Europe is a lot smaller.
1 coffee cup requires 1 tablespoon of coarsely ground coffee.
Important: Do not take it apart. Just rinse and leave to dry.
Coffee Machine
Note: If you use the permanent filter, please clean it after each cycle.
Hot Chocolate Machine
Machine is located in the lower corner cabinet. Add milk and your favorite chocolate powder and turn on. Be careful, the hot chocolate is really hot!

Smoke Detectors are located in the following rooms: one on the first floor in the main living area. On the second floor there is one in the hallway and one in each of the three bedrooms.
These are battery powered and wired into the home so they may activate if there is a power outage.
Carbon Monoxide detectors are located on the first floor on the wall in the middle of livingroom and on the second floor hallway wall next to thermostat. Both are approximately 6 feet from the floor.
Note: the house is entirely electric with no gas however it is important to keep door closed from garage to house so no exhaust fumes enter.
These are only battery powered and will make loud beeping noise if activated by high levels of carbon monoxide.
If any of the detectors are making any sounds at all please check the house, evacuate if necessary and contact us immediately.
In case of a power outage, flashlights can be found in bedside tables in each of the bedrooms and in the kitchen drawer.

We love the low key nature of this place. It’s a family owned pub and has a great outside area with tables in a shaded garden. The shade is a perfect spot for resting with a glass at the end of a summer day! Head inside on cooler days and you’ll find cosy tables and a fire. Good variety of food to suit all tastes and they do run specials from time to time. Sunday lunch listening to live music is something we enjoy!
The Meeting Place offers breakfast and lunch every day and, on Friday & Saturday they are open in the evenings. Very good food and value.

Great coffee spot in Noordhoek with a tempting selection of pastries too!
Bakery, deli and coffee shop by day, Tapas by night … always an awesome vibe!
Cakes, pastries and light lunches in a garden venue with oak trees, plus cosy interior with a fire.
Small batch, artisanal ice cream. Slow churned in Noordhoek. We create all of our ice cream completely from scratch with the highest quality, locally sourced ingredients.
A little family run Italian Gelateria. Scooping since 199364576.
Cape of Good Hope. This is neither southernmost point of Africa, nor where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, that would be Cape Agullas, some 3 hours further around the Cape coast. Cape Point is a landmark destination with spectacular scenery, funicular railway and many, many baboons!
Chapmans Peak is undoubtedly one of the worlds great drives. Spectacular mountain drive way above the deep blue Atlantic. It’s a 1 hour round trip without stops but you’ll certainly be stopping for photo opps! You can follow this link for directions from the house. From there continue on to Hout Bay where you’ll find lively restaurants, bars, beach, and flea-market on Sundays. Our favourite restaurant for Sunday lunch is Chapmans Peak Hotel. Great calamari, fresh fish and (if you must) ribs and meat are on the menu. No bookings taken so arrive either early (noon), or later (2pm). If you have time it’s worth continuing 15 minutes north to Camps Bay, interestingly compared by the locals to French Riviera (it is not by a country mile but still fun!). Kerb-side bars and bistros, interesting and a good beach. However it is massively touristic.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is a spectacular place and a must do for you garden lovers. A 30 minute drive from Kommetjie, it’s acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Few gardens can match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch, against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. Don’t miss a chance to visit!
A 3 mile drive from the house is Imhoff Farm where you may enjoy camel rides, a snake park and several small curio and art shops. You’ll also find Blue Water restaurant which has great food and service and is also child-friendly. Pizzeria made to order and superb deli.
Visit African ‘Jasckass’ Penguins at Boulders Beach, one of Cape Town’s most visited beaches and the only place in the world where you get close to African Penguins. Swim at nearby secluded sandy cove. Take a picnic. Warm and safe bathing.
A 5 minute stroll from the house to beautiful 9kms of golden sand. Atlantic is bracing though.
For the energetic walk from Kommetjie to Noordhoek Beach and see the ship that came aground in a storm in 1900. The ship is still buried deep in the sand. The captain mistook this for Cape Point and legend has it he refused to leave the ship for another 3 years as he was too distressed at his navigational error-BSN-before satnav. Great surfing.
This is one of our favourite clubs. It’s extremely well maintained and a true challenge of golfing ability in all departments of the game. The halfway house is excellent as well!
The Steenberg golf course is rated as one of the top three courses to visit in South Africa, while the Estate itself has earned global recognition as a flagship residential address. The scenery is majestic as it’s set in the heart of the tranquil Constantia Winelands and surrounded by the Silvermine mountain range. They maintain it in excellent condition year-round.
This has been a regular course for us and rarely disappoints! It sits at the foot of the Silvermine mountains and is only a 25 minute drive from Cape Town. The beautiful setting, abundant bird life (look out for the iconic fish eagle) and accessibility make it one of our favourites.
There is a BP station in Sunnydale. Follow this link for directions. They accept all major credit cards.
There are a few medical facilities and pharmacies in the area. Please refer to this map for a list.
The Blue Route Mall offers excellent shopping with all the local big name stores. There is a multi-screen cinema with current feature movies at 50% less cost than Europe! Loads of good eateries. Free parking.
Sun Valley Mall is a 10 minute drive. All the shopping you need, plus coffee/light meal shops, banks and ATM facilities. Free parking.
Of course one of the major attractions in this region must be The Cape Winelands. Specifically Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek, all within an easy 1-2 hour drive. There are some more direct route options but we prefer driving to Muizenberg and then taking the coastal road (for example here is our route to Stellnbosch). At times you’re just 30-50 yards from the surf of False Bay. It is absolutely stunning and unlike anywhere we have driven. See local fishermen hauling in their nets, alongside those fishing with poles. The surf here is wild!
There are very good Wine Route guide books available for all regions, but from experience we look for those with lovely properties and excellent wines. Generally for a small cost of R25 you will get to sample 5 or more lovely wines at beautiful properties. These outings are not really suitable for children though they are warmly welcomed.
It is possible to make it a day trip. However we always stay 1 or 2 nights to really enjoy the experience. The accommodations options are extensive and many of them are affordable with high standards.
There are world class wines on display and these are some of our favourites. Most of our descriptions will be described as stunning, superb, excellent, wonderful, etc. That is because there are really no bad things to say about South African wines!
Leaving Somerset West on R44 towards Stellenbosch make your first stop at Ken Forrester. This is not a particularly exciting property, but Ken Forrester is locally known as “Mr.Chenin Blanc.” Excellent wines.
The next stop after Ken Forrester would be Kleine Zalze which also offers superb lunches.
A short drive after Morgenhof to L’Avenir with stunning views. This property offers accommodation and we have stayed there on several occasions during the past 30 years. We would recommend a 2-night stay and perhaps use it as a base for wine tasting outings.
Morgenhof is a delight and the wines are superior. Great lunches and comfortable tasting room which is really welcome when the average summer temperature is touching 30C.
Consistently one of the best in the Paarl region.
Nederburg offers not only a wide range of award-winning wines and a lovely bistro-style restaurant called The Red Table, but also historic buildings, contemporary tasting facilities, a museum showcasing items associated with Nederburg’s illustrious history, beautiful gardens and glorious views of the majestic Drakenstein mountains.
Thank you for staying with us, and we hope you enjoyed your stay. If there were any issues with your stay, please don’t hesitate to tell us, as we want to ensure we can resolve them for the next guest.
We love online reviews!
VRBO, and Airbnb auto sends you a review request. All you need to do is click the “leave a review” button, give us a star rating, and write a sentence or two about what you liked the best during your stay.
Was it the comfy bed? The information and recommendations? Or maybe the mountain views from the deck?
If you are unable to leave us 5 stars, please don’t hesitate to contact us first to let us know why – you are key to helping our next guests to have a wonderful time.
Thank you!

French P
Whole Milk, Almond Milk (original flavor), and Half & Half are available in the fridge. We stock a fresh supply at the beginning of each stay. Enjoy!

We understand that sometimes accidents happen! Should you break anything please let us know immediately – if it’s minor we usually won’t charge. If it’s a larger issue (e.g. the TV screen!) we would like to agree the cost with you before you leave to avoid any issues later. Thank you!
